Columbia Valley Credit Union
A while ago, when Gurmit Manhas was visiting Calgary, he dropped into a car dealership to buy his daughter some new wheels for her graduation present and discovered that he'd left his wallet and chequebook back at home in Golden. So he contacted the manager of Columbia Valley Credit Union's Golden branch-where he has banked for years-at home because it was a Saturday. Together, they quickly and effortlessly worked something out with the sales associate.
"We made up a cheque on a piece of paper!" says Gurmit by phone from his home in the breathtaking Kicking Horse Country nestled in the southeast corner of BC.
In the late 1970s, the married father of four opened the region's first video store, Star Video, which was probably one of the earliest in the province considering that VCRs had just hit the market in 1976. He is also a developer of residential property in and around Golden. He holds both personal and business accounts with Columbia Valley.
"I think of the credit union as a partner, not a bank. The people are great, and if you've got a small- or medium-sized business, they'll listen and help you out."
Credit unions are here to help give people in BC's smaller towns and communities a leg up. In parts of the province like Golden, where the economy is expanding with development tied to tourism and the service industry, they partner with business people like Gurmit to stimulate sustainable growth, healthy communities and other golden opportunities.
